A road accident involving a red Scania Marcopolo bus with registration number GW 9090-18 has reportedly resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries on the Accra to Kumasi highway.

The crash occurred early Friday morning around 4:00 am at Atwemamena, a community between Bunso and Akyem Asafo in the Eastern Region.

The bus, traveling from Kumasi towards Accra, collided with a truck heading in the opposite direction.

Eyewitnesses described the accident as severe, noting that “several passengers, including the bus driver and mate, lost their lives. I have seen a decapitated leg in the mangled front of the bus. Victims have been transported to Suhum Government Hospital for emergency care”

This tragic event is part of a disturbing trend in Ghana, where road crashes remain alarmingly frequent.

In the first quarter of this year alone, 4,503 road accidents were recorded, resulting in 829 deaths and 4,955 injuries.

The Orthopaedic Association of Ghana (OAG) has called on the government to implement comprehensive trauma care systems and enforce stringent road safety measures.

During its 4th Annual General and Scientific Conference at Kwahu on May 16, the OAG emphasized the need for timely and effective treatment for trauma patients, strict enforcement of road traffic laws, promotion of helmet and seat belt use, and improvements in road infrastructure to enhance safety for all road users.
