East Legon District Commander was assigned via Whatsap message – DCOP Sarpong
The Accra Region Police Commander, DCOP Adusei Sarpong has revealed East Legon District Commander, DSP George Asare, was assigned through a Whatsapp message to lead the patrol team for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Election on January 31, 2019.
DSP George Asare, testifying at the Emile Short Commission of Inquiry said the East Legon District Police Command was not part of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
He said his outfit was asked to step aside ahead of the by-election.
“Ideally the District Commander in whose jurisdiction the by-election is to be held is supposed to be part but this did not happen in my case and it can best be answered by the regional command and director of operations,” he told the Commission.
However, testifying at the Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday, DCOP Sarpong said the East Legon Commander was expected to play a general role at the by-election.
“We had 428 policemen which included some police commanders and although some were not given specific roles, they were expected to perform general roles. The East Legon District Commander was also expected to play a general role,” he explained.
DCOP Sarpong added that all commanders were expected to meet at the regional headquarters for deployment on the day of the elections.
“They were assigned by a WhatsApp text and DSP Asare did not reply my message but another officer, Bonsu whom I sent the same message, replied. He did not report at the time I was leaving for the polling station so it’s either he came late for deployment or did not come at all,” he added.
