The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has provided details from its preliminary investigation into the alleged bribery incident captured at one of the polling stations during the Ejisu Parliamentary by-election on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

In a statement shared on social media, the EC clarified that the man captured in the viral video had dropped an envelope containing money for the EC officials.

The commission mentioned that the man inquired if the official had eaten and offered to buy them lunch.

“Following the incident that occurred during the conduct of the Ejisu By-Election today, Tuesday, April 30, 2024, the Commission has undertaken preliminary investigations.

“The investigations revealed that the officers at the said Polling Station, namely Fumesua Pentecost Church Polling Station with Polling Station Code F311503, were Temporary Election Officials of the Electoral Commission recruited for the Ejisu By-Election.

“They are Regina Serwaa, Ballot Issuer, and George Sasu, Presiding Officer. Our investigations further revealed that the man in the video walked up to their table and inquired whether they had eaten. He then placed the envelope on the table and asked them to use the contents of the envelope for their lunch, after which he walked away,” the EC stated.

The EC indicated that after withdrawing the officers from the field, it held preliminary discussions with the Ghana Police Service to initiate the process for criminal investigations into the matter.

Although the EC did not specify, the man captured in the said video was the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Professor Kingsley Nyarko.

In the video, the MP is seen interacting with the electoral officials and removing an envelope from his pocket.

He attempts to hand the envelope to the EC officials, who do not accept it.

The MP then places the envelope on the table of the EC official before walking away.
