NPP is sorry, so I am sorry too – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu apologises to Fomena MP
Majority Leader in parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has rendered an apology to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah.
Speaking to JoyNews’ Evans Mensah on PM Express Wednesday, he indicated that the party has regretted expelling the Formena MP for a personal decision he made.
This he said, “the party has eaten a humble pie by extension of reasoning it comes to me.”
Prior to December 7, Mr Asiamah was expelled from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) following his decision not to contest the Fomena seat on the ticket of the party.
According to him, his decision to go solo was influenced by the unfair treatment he faced at the primaries when he lost.
On the side of the governing party, Andrew Amoako Asiamah had forfeited his membership by his action and that was enough grounds to withdraw him from the House pursuant to Article 97(1)(g) of the 1992 Constitution.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Article 97(1)(g) of the Constitution states that: A member of Parliament shall vacate his seat in Parliament if he leaves the party of which he was a member at the time of his election to Parliament to join another party or seeks to remain in Parliament as an independent member,” the NPP said in a statement.
However, at the end of the polls, Mr Asiamah was declared by the EC as the MP-elect for the Formena Constituency after he polled 12,805 votes.
In response to a question by host Evans Mensah as to whether he is sorry about the expulsion, he indicated that “if the party is sorry and I am part of the party and so I am also sorry.”
Mr Mensah-Bonsu, reiterated that the NPP had misjudged the move but “if the party has now taken a decision to unwind it affects me.”
