The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) has congratulated the former Attorney General, Mr. Martin Alamisi Amidu, on his job as Ghana’s First Special Prosecutor, saying it would support his efforts to achieve results.

“…The Coalition wishes to re-affirm its support to contribute constructively to the development of regulations in consistent with the Act to guide the powers of the Special Prosecutor,” it said.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, swore Mr Amidu in, on Friday, as the first Special Prosecutor for the newly created Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

This follows his record vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament and his subsequent approval, after he had been nominated by the President.

A statement issued by the GACC, and copied to the Ghana News Agency said: “The ‘Citizen Vigilante’ is ascribed by many as a man of good character and integrity and these qualities are exactly what is needed in Ghana’s anticorruption agenda.

“Mr. Amidu’s independence in judgment as well as his intolerance for corruption is one feature that perfectly suits the role of Special Prosecutor.”

The GACC said it was hopeful that Mr Amidu’s office would be provided with the requisite resources to execute its mandate under the Act, 959.

The Coalition urged the Special Prosecutor to remain grounded to exercise his authority in fervent impartiality to effectively impact on Ghana’s fight against corruption.

“The Coalition remains committed to monitoring the implementation of the Act, specifically the establishment of the Office as outlined in the Act,” it said.

It urged the Attorney General (AG) and the Presidency to champion the speedy passage of all outstanding anti-corruption Bills, such as the Conduct of the Public Officers Bill, Right to Information Bill, Witness Protection, and Whistleblower (Amendment) Bill, which it said were very relevant to the work of the Special Prosecutor.
