37-year-old fisherman drowns in Volta Lake
A 37-year-old fisherman, John Asabutey, has drowned in the Volta Lake at Kudikope, a fishing community in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern region, ABC News Ghana can report.
Despite the incident reportedly happening on May 27, the body of the late John Asabutey is still yet to be found despite a desperate search effort by a joint team of NADMO officials and local divers.
Information gathered indicates the deceased was part of three fishermen who went fishing on the said day and got caught up in a violent storm. While two of the fishermen managed to swim to safety after the canoe in which they were operating capsized, John was unfortunately carried away by the waters.
NADMO officials in the district have expressed serious concerns over cases of canoe accidents in the area. On May 26, 2019, a day before the latest incident, a decomposing body of a man was retrieved at the same site.
NADMO officials attribute the increasing incident to failure by the canoe users to adhere to safety mechanisms particularly on the use of life jacket.
