Tamale City FC set GH₵ 800 minimum salary for players
Former Black Stars captain and Tamale City FC head coach, Hamza Mohammed, has disclosed the Division One club has set a minimum salary of eight-hundred Ghana Cedis for its players.
Some football people have started a conversation on setting a least wage standard for local footballers in Ghana.
Mohammed stated the Tamale-based club pay their players more than some Ghana Premier League clubs and said the club tried paying players allowances because of COVID-19 but couldn’t sustain it.
“We need more investors to come into the league because in Tamale City, we pay more than some Premier League teams”, Hamza told Joy FM.
“The minimum wage of Tamale City players is GH ₵ 800, so you can see how it inspires and motivates them. That is why Tamale City is where it is today.”
“We provided allowances for the players during COVID. We did it once and we could not sustain it because it’s difficult.
Former Black Stars defender, Lee Addy, is among those making calls for a minimum wage standard and has stated it will help stop players from moving in mass outside the country.
“In Ethiopia, the FA has set a standard for players to be paid a minimum of $1,000. Most players in Ghana will prefer to play in Ethiopia than in Ghana because of the salary.
“We hope the GFA can turn things around on this issue but it must start from now”, he told Happy FM after they were evacuated from Ethiopia in July after issuing a distress call in July because of COVID-19 restrictions.
