Playing behind closed doors; each club to receive GHC100, 000 from Gov’t as compensation – Report
The Government of Ghana is set to pay Ghana Premier League and National Division One clubs compensations for playing games behind closed doors, Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM has gathered.
This is to serve as a cushion to clubs in the two top divisions of Ghana football, playing matches without supporters, the main source of revenue for clubs in the local scene.
Each of the eighteen clubs playing in the Ghana Premier League will reportedly receive GHC100,000 from the government as an alleviation fund for playing league games without fans in the stadia.
The first tranche of GHC50, 000 will be paid to each club by Friday, December 4, 2020.
Each National Division One League club will also receive GHC50, 000 each before their league starts in January 2021.
Playing football games behind closed doors of the 2020/21 Ghana football season in the meantime has been caused by the spread of the COVID-19 in the country.
And as part of measures to curb a second wave of the disease, the Ghana Football Association in collaboration with government sports bodies has decided to let clubs play games behind closed doors.
Initially, President Akufo-Addo in his address to give the go-ahead for contact sports in Ghana to begin said 25% of spectators could be admitted into the stadia.
But days to the start of the Ghana Premier League, the Ministry of Youth and Sports released a statement not allow fans into the stadia for fear of the second wave of COVID-19 in Ghana.
The Ghana Premier League has entered match week four today, and each club has played without fans for the past three weeks.
