NCCE condemns NDC’s Ofosu-Ampofo

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has condemned the contents of a leaked audiotape uttered by a male voice purported to be that of the National Chairman of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, which urged communicators of the party “to wage a relentless war” against the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa; and also “insult” the Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev Prof Emmanuel Asante.

Though the National Communication Officer of the NDC, Mr Sammy Gyamfi has described the tape as “fake” and “doctored” in an interview with Class91.3FM as well as on various other radio stations, his deputy, Mr Kwaku Boahen, has come out to confirm that the voice, indeed, is that of Mr Ofosu-Ampofo.

Mr Boahen told Accra-based NEAT FM that he and Mr Gyamfi, as well as some other party communicators, were in a meeting with Mr Ofosu-Ampofo when the NDC Chairman made the comments.

The Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service has invited Mr Ofosu-Ampofo for questioning over the matter.

In a statement, however, the NCCE said it “unequivocally condemns the contents of the tape”, and reminded the “NDC and all political parties to conduct their activities in accordance with the tenets of the 1992 Constitution and the law”.

“Unguarded utterances that have the potential to create fear and panic should be condemned in no uncertain terms by all and not be allowed to fester in Ghana’s democracy.”

“The NCCE notes the swiftness with which the Ghana Police Service has invited the NDC Chairman for questioning. We urge the Ghana Police Service to expedite investigations to ascertain the veracity of the matter”, the statement said.
