Minority slams gov’t for re-awarding Terminal 1 contract to McDan
The Minority in Parliament has criticised the Akufo-Addo administration for re-awarding the management of the Terminal 1 transit contract at the Kotoka International Airport to McDan Shipping Company Limited.
Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, said in an interview with Accra 100.5FM’s Richard Appiah Sarpong that the initial agreement signed was between the governments of Ghana and the United States of America.
But now, he claimed, the government of Ghana has given a 15-year contract to McDan to deal directly with the US counterpart.
This, the opposition lawmaker said, was wrong because of the security implications in transporting goods from abroad through KIA.
He said on Wednesday, 19 February 2020 that: “A private company has now signed a 15-year agreement with the government to take over Terminal One and then that private company, McDan, goes to engage the Americans”.
“The question is: what really is McDan doing that the Ghana government could not deal with their counterpart in America?”
“I am very worried about the security implications because this is about logistics, it is about flights, it can be about weapons, it can be illicit drugs and all of that.
“Now, the US Military has signed an agreement with a private entity. All kinds of things can happen on our blindside without supervision of Parliament. What is the nature of the deal?”
He further indicated that the Minority will petition the US government over the matter.
