Journalists boycott NPP over Afeku’s bodyguard attack
A group of Photo-Journalists in the Western Region have boycotted all media coverage organized by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Member of Parliament in the Evalue-Ajomoro-Gwira Constituency Catherine Afeku for what the group says is the unjustified defense of the attack meted out by MP’s personal bodyguard on Metro TV’s Cameraman Alhaji Mustapha Gilbert Ashaley
The group in a press conference on Sunday demanded an unqualified apology from the Minister of State at the Presidency, and Member of Parliament for the area, Catherine Afeku for spewing ‘lies’ about the abuse on Ashaley.
Chairman for the group Charles Egyir stated that Journalists in the Western Region will resist any attempt by Afeku to use her office to suppress media freedom.
He said photo Journalists would stand firmly together with their colleague until the right thing is done and have thus called for a thorough investigation by the Police into the matter without favour or inducement from the politician.
“We would also like to throw our weight behind the Ghana Journalists
Association (Western-GJA) for the call made for the immediate arrest of the bodyguard of the Member of Parliament for Evalue-Jomoro Gwira Constituency and Minister State at the Presidency for assaulting the Cameraman and deleting his video footages from his camera.”
Mr Egyir further warned that any attempt on the part of the Police to water down the case, and allow the bodyguard to go scot-free, would not only incur our displeasure, but could attract an absolute boycott of all Police programs.
