Implementers of No Business As Usual Project (NBU) will from next year 2019 introduce the usage of a modern toilet facility called Biofil/Bio-digester within the various households of Asokore Mampong Municipality.

The foregoing initiative according to them is geared towards clamping down issues related to sanitation and will be open up to households that express interest in adopting its usage.

The Bio-digester toilet facility as disclosed by NBU Project Manager Mr. Okity-Boamah Daniel will be constructed at the expense of the beneficiary (household) under flexible payment modules, after which households will stand the chance of owning it.

According to another provision under this system, households who may not be able to exercise ownership over the facility due to their inability to make payment for  constructional cost will be subjected to a monthly fee payment for its usage. The introduction of this contemporary lavatory in the municipality bears the endorsement of officials of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and authorities of the assembly.

Civil Society Organizations will be mandated by authorities of NBU Project to set up offices at various locations within the municipality where interested residents will access their services for the provision of a Biodigester toilet facility.Youth within the municipality as a way of reducing unemployment will be trained on how to construct the facility and make a living out of it.

The Biofil digester toilet system is a modern and unique toilet technology to manage sludge. It is an innovative on-site waste water treatment option that offers integrated treatment of sewage in a manner that poses minimal risk to the environment and public health and the opportunity of sustainable economic returns on natural biological treatment of waste in the long term.

It works by providing an enclosed environment for natural process of aerobic decomposition of faeces including toilet paper and degradable materials.

The Biofil digester is an aerobic decomposition system which treats toilet waste and the flush water in the chamber. It breaks down the toilet waste completely with oxygen in a way that odour is not generated. The chamber itself is a filter. When one flushes the water closet, the digester filters the toilet waste which moves through grades of sand, fibre net and porous concrete, allowing non-toxic clean and odorless water to drain out leaving the toilet waste in a suspended environment where oxygen gets to every part of it.

It is environmentally friendly, very hygienic and promotes good sanitation. The accumulated gas can be used for domestic purposes like cooking. The biofil waste water can be channeled to water user’s garden or any other purpose because of its odourless nature. The facility can be used for more than 30 to 40 years without dislodging.

These were disclosed by the Project Manager of NBU Project during an end of year meeting with CSOs which was held at the hub of NBU Project. The meeting highlighted what they (implementors of the project) were able to achieve throughout they year, recap activities that were undertaken as a group and areas they fell short.

Present during the meeting was Esther Matey, NBU Project Coordinator.
