Afari-Gyan reveals why political leaders refuse to accept defeat in elections
Former Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan has revealed why political party
leaders and the parties in entirety refuse defeat in elections.
According to him, these politicians collect huge sums of monies from individuals and other stakeholders with the aim of compensating them when they are voted into power hence, find excuses to give these people when they lose the elections.
He made this revelation at a workshop organised by the West African Election Observers Network in Accra on Tuesday, May 14, 2019.
He said, “I have suspicion about why they do that, first of all, they collect huge sums of money from people with the promise that when they win, they will be compensated”.
He added that, “If you lose, they must find a way of telling them that they lost because the electoral commission cheated you or somebody did you in. that is one factor and it is true that they collect huge sums of money from individuals, accompanying it with all kinds of promises”.
He further stated that some of these politicians do not even stand a chance of winning the elections at all yet, they get people to believe their lies and follow them.
He averred that, “I can’t understand what some people who clearly have no chance of winning an election deceive themselves they’ll win and get people to believe that they will win. If he loses, and sometimes very badly, they find excuses”.
He, however, noted that to end this menace, the Ghanaian electorates must become more sophisticated and be able to detect the lies politicians tell them.
