Mass dwelling of Persons with Disability (PWD) within Asokore Mampong municipality has imposed a huge burden on authorities of the department of Social Welfare and Community Development in the area, THE PRESS RADIO has been informed.
The municipality per the status quo has a high registered number of individuals with disabilities unlike other areas in the region, insofar the Department of Social Welfare is unable to meet the demands of most of them.
This is to say that the disability fund which is just 2% of the assembly’s common fund is too minimal to address their needs considering the number of registered PWDs.
Statistics show that the current number of PWDs in the municipality currently stands at about 9,487 and  likely to increase to about 10,672 by the year 2021.
 Infiltration
It is rumored that scores of PWDs residing within the municipality originally are not Ghanaians but are rather immigrants from countries including Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.
Allegations disclose that they have managed to acquire voters’ ID card to legitimize their nationality and have as a result infiltrated the enlisted number of PWDs at the blind side of authorities to swell up the figures and stand the chance as beneficiaries of the disability  fund.
Interview
Speaking on the sidelines during holding of the maiden event for Persons with Special Needs by  facilitators of NBU Project at Asokore Mampong, the Municipal Director for Social Welfare and Community Development Madam Esther Apraku Nyarko noted that one nuisance characteristic of the foregoing is that the minute nature of the fund makes it difficult to put registered persons with disabilities into categories and share the money to their satisfaction.
“The money is highly inadequate to meet their expectations” she stated exclusively to THE PRESS RADIO.
Low disability fund she underlined again owes to the fact that the common fund earned by the assembly is not much and that the IGF generated is very low.
