Work on China-funded ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja begins
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is set to have a new headquarters in the next 26 months.
This was announced during the laying of foundation blocks for the construction for the new ECOWAS Headquarters in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. The project is being financed with Chinese government funds.
The ceremony held over the weekend coincided with the meeting of Heads of State who were attending an ordinary summit to dicuss pressing issues acrosss the region.
ECOWAS’ official Twitter handle shared photos of the current chairman, Umaru Sissoco Embalo along with Nigeria’s Muhammadu Buhari and Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone at the ceremony.
The caption of the tweet read: “The Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS laid the Foundation of a new ECOWAS Headquarters building on December 4, 2022 in Abuja, Nigeria.
“The new headquarters Project which is being financed by the Chinese Government through China Aid is expected to be completed in 26 months.”
This is the latest project to be financed with Chinese funds. China financed the current African Union Headquarters in Ethiopia and has also constructed Parliaments among others the Republic of Congo, Congo and most recently Zimbabwe.
