The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Old Tafo in the Ashanti Region, Mr Fred Owusu Obeng, has called on the youth of the community to remain calm as investigations commence into the death of a 35-year-old man allegedly beaten by the police.

Mr Obeng urged the youth not to take the law into their own hands.

He said this in an interview with Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah when he visited the bereaved family at Tafo Three Miles to console and mourn with them.

The family of Mr Kofi Opoku, the deceased, on Sunday, 7 July 2019 stormed the Tafo Pankrono Divisional Police Command after the incident amidst claims that the officers pummelled him to death.

According to the family, Opoku was pulled over by the police but refused to stop.

Police patrol officers at Tafo-Nhyiaeso then gave him chase.

He was then beaten by the police until he went unresponsive.

The victim was said to have been taken to the Tafo Government Hospital and was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The police called for reinforcement after the youth in the area became agitated over the matter.

Nine persons including the deceased’s brother were reportedly arrested.

The family insisted that the police must come clear on the matter.

The deceased left behind a pregnant wife and two children.
