I used to fight Alhaji Grusah over ‘juju’ – Ex-King Faisal player
A former King Faisal player, Kwabena Poku has downplayed the role of ‘juju’ in football.
Contrasting views remain on the efficacy of the voodoo phenomenon in football, specifically the Ghana Premier League.
While some believe in the existence and potency of juju to swing the result of matches in a team’s favour, others hold the view that the practice does not exist in football.
Opoku spent nearly a decade with King Faisal and has been sharing his experience in the GPL.
He told Asempa FM that at the early stages of his career, he was a staunch superstitious believer but as he developed through the ranks, he realized that it was just a mental tool to pump the players to give off their best.
He insists that football is decided on the pitch and not by some acts of a juju man.
“When I started my career, I was doing juju but later on when I got away from it, I realized it made me more serious. It made training hard as I believed the training was the only juju. At BA United and some other clubs, I used to do juju but I regretted later and got away from it. If you train hard and rely on God, you’ll do better things than the juju”.
Kwabena Poku also revealed numerous clashes with King Faisal owner Alhaji Karim Grusah.
He mentioned that he clashed with the veteran administrator juju.
“I used to fight with Alhaji over juju. He will bring the thing but I will reject it and it will end up in some exchanges. I never accepted juju at King Faisal. We fought a lot of times, he said.
