A Chinese national called Sun Shujun has been jailed 20 years for torturing mine workers in Rwanda.

The court that sentenced Shujun also jailed a citizen identified as the employee of the Chinese man.

The unnamed man was handed a 12-year jail term, a journalist who attended the court session told the BBC.

The Chinese was filmed in a three-minute viral video in August 2021 beating Rwandan men tied on a tree – the video was reportedly taken by angry workers who circulated it on social media leading to the arrest of the culprit.

The victims are reported to have been former workers at a mine operated by Shujun in Rutsiro district and who were allegedly linked to theft, a BBC Africa LIVE report stated.

The Chinese embassy in Kigali condemned “unlawful acts” in the video.

Witnesses told the court that Shujun had erected a cross where those suspected of stealing from him were tied and whipped, the BBC report added.
