Audio: Majority leader sad as big shots drop in NDC
Majority Leader and New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker for Suame Constituency, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu seems to be sad about the decision by some big shots in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to bow out of Parliament.
To him, his biggest shock was that of lawmaker for Nadowli /Kaleo, Alban Kingsford Bagbin.
He said his decision not to seek re-election would certainly affect the legislature.
He revealed that internal politics in the NDC and other factors might have compelled Ghana’s longest serving Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Bagbin not to contest at all.
“I think the decision for such great personalities to bow out is not surprising, but I am very sad because a person like Alban Bagbin is someone who has a great experience and has helped shaped parliament and so I feel sad about it and others as well,” he told Accra based Okay FM, monitored by Adomonline.com.
For the first time in some 28 years, the opposition NDC would have to field new candidates to represent some constituencies.
Four others aside Mr Bagbin, Richard Quashigah, MP for Keta; Clement Kofi Humado, MP for Anlo; Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, MP for Ketu South and Dr Mrs Bernice Adiku Heloo, MP for Hohoe, will also not seek re-election.
Mr Mensah-Bonsu said the absence of the experienced legislators would create a vacuum in the Minority caucus in Parliament.
