Atiwa: Residents stranded as river overflows
Residents of Akrofufu, Akwaboaso, Asamamma, Ekoso and its surrounding communities in the Atiwa West District of the Eastern region are stranded after hours of rainfall led to the overflow of a river which flooded the only road linking the communities to the District Capital.
The deluge of flood from the River Akukuo submerged the section of the road preventing vehicles to cross to other communities. School children who had to commute on the affected road also couldn’t attend school.
Some few residents, however, audaciously walked through the floods which was almost around their waist level.
National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the district are calling for boats to help transport the stranded residents.
“The Akukuo river has overflown its banks so the road is now closed from Abomosu to Kwabeng. So we need boats to convey passengers from the other side to the other end. We have appealed to National so we are waiting,” the Atiwa West Acting District Director of National Disaster Management Organization, Harrison Darko, told Starr News.
Meanwhile, several homes including residential accommodation for the District Police Commander are reportedly flooded at Anyinam in the Atiwa East District during the downpour on Saturday June 6, 2019.
