A mother was reportedly killed in front of her child on Sunday as intense fighting continued in Sudan’s Kordofan region, highlighting the devastating impact of the country’s prolonged conflict on civilians.
According to the account provided, the child witnessed the death of the mother, who was reportedly the only person caring for and protecting the child. The incident has drawn attention to the growing humanitarian consequences of the fighting, particularly for families caught in areas affected by the conflict.
The fighting involves Sudan’s Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), two rival forces whose war has continued since April 2023. Kordofan has increasingly become one of the major areas of confrontation as the conflict has shifted across different parts of Sudan.
Recent reports from international organisations have warned that civilians in Kordofan face significant dangers from fighting, including attacks affecting homes, markets and other civilian infrastructure. UNICEF reported in July that at least 330 children had been killed or injured across Sudan during the first six months of 2026, with Darfur and Kordofan recording some of the highest levels of child casualties.
The humanitarian situation has continued to deteriorate as communities struggle with displacement, limited access to healthcare, food shortages and disruption to essential services.
The United Nations has also warned about the increasing use of drones and other long-range attacks in Sudan. A UN-mandated fact-finding mission said in September that both major sides in the conflict had carried out attacks that affected civilian areas, including hospitals, schools, markets and displacement sites.
For children caught in the fighting, the consequences extend beyond immediate physical danger. UNICEF has warned that repeated bombardments and displacement are contributing to fear, anxiety and trauma among children living in affected communities.

Kordofan residents have increasingly found themselves caught between competing armed forces, with some communities facing attacks, displacement and interruptions to basic services.
In September, the UN human rights chief, Volker Türk, renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire and warned that civilians remained at imminent risk in Kordofan and other parts of Sudan. He also called for an end to attacks on civilian infrastructure.
As fighting continues, humanitarian organisations have repeatedly called for greater protection of civilians and improved access to assistance.
For families in Kordofan, however, the consequences are immediate. Homes can become unsafe, communities can be displaced and children can lose parents and caregivers in moments of violence.
The reported killing of the mother serves as another reminder that behind the military confrontation are civilians whose lives continue to be disrupted by a war that has already displaced millions across Sudan.
