President John Dramani Mahama has addressed world leaders at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, using Ghana’s national statement to highlight issues of global cooperation, Africa’s development and the need for greater international action.
President Mahama delivered the address on Thursday, September 24, 2026, as part of the General Debate being held under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.”
His appearance at the global gathering formed part of Ghana’s broader participation in the high-level UN meetings, where the country has sought to contribute to discussions on development, international cooperation, peace and issues affecting Africa and the wider developing world.
One of the key issues highlighted by President Mahama was Africa’s call for a different approach to its relationship with international partners. He said the continent was seeking partnerships based on equality rather than approaches centred on charity, particularly in the financing of development.
The President also spoke about reparatory justice for Africa and people of African descent, continuing an issue he raised during the previous UN General Assembly. He maintained that the campaign should be viewed as an effort toward healing and justice rather than division or revenge.
President Mahama further used the platform to outline Ghana’s plans ahead of the country’s assumption of the African Union chairmanship in January 2027.
He said Ghana would use the position to promote greater continental integration, accelerate implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area and contribute to efforts aimed at strengthening peace and security across Africa.
The President also addressed international conflicts and called for dialogue as a means of resolving disputes. His comments came against the background of continuing conflicts and humanitarian concerns in different parts of the world.
Climate financing was another issue raised during his engagements in New York, with President Mahama calling for predictable financing that would not further increase the debt burdens of countries vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
His UN appearance followed several engagements on the sidelines of the General Assembly, including meetings with international leaders and officials, as well as events connected to Ghana’s Accra Reset agenda and reparatory justice initiative.
Before the main address, the President had participated in discussions aimed at advancing Africa’s development priorities and strengthening international cooperation. He also engaged business leaders as part of efforts to promote Ghana as an investment destination.
President Mahama’s participation in the 81st UN General Assembly forms part of Ghana’s diplomatic efforts to present its position on major international issues while advocating for stronger partnerships between Africa and the global community.
