Security operatives in Sokoto State, Nigeria, have arrested a man suspected of providing information to bandits operating in parts of the state.
The suspect has been identified as Ashiru Abubakar, a resident of Gumfa Gebe village in Wamakko Local Government Area.
According to the police, Abubakar is suspected of having links with criminal elements operating around the Romo community in Tambuwal Local Government Area.
His arrest followed investigations into alleged activities involving the supply of information to bandits and threats against residents of the community.
The Sokoto State Police Command said the suspect was allegedly connected to a threat issued to residents of Romo, where criminals reportedly demanded N10 million.
According to investigators, the residents were allegedly warned that the community could come under attack if the demanded money was not paid.
Police said investigations subsequently led security operatives to Abubakar, who was arrested over his alleged connection with the criminal network.
The Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the arrest and said the suspect had been taken through the necessary investigative process.
Rufai said Abubakar had subsequently been charged before a court following investigations into his alleged activities and links to criminal elements.
The arrest forms part of ongoing security operations aimed at disrupting criminal networks and identifying individuals suspected of providing support or information to bandits operating in Sokoto State.
Banditry remains a major security challenge in several parts of northern Nigeria, with communities in affected areas facing threats ranging from attacks and kidnappings to demands for money.
Security agencies have increasingly focused on individuals suspected of acting as informants or providing logistical and intelligence support to criminal groups.
