Eleven people have been killed and three others injured after a shooting at a house in the Ziko area of KwaMakhutha, south of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night, September 22, 2026, after a group of people had gathered at the house for a party.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), 13 men and one woman, who was believed to be pregnant, were at the residence when three men reportedly arrived and opened fire.
Ten of the victims, including the woman, died at the scene, while four others were taken to hospital for treatment. Police later confirmed that one of those transported to hospital died from their injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities to 11.
Three other people survived the incident with injuries and were receiving medical attention.
KwaZulu-Natal police have launched a manhunt for the three suspects. No arrests had been reported at the time of the latest police statement.
Authorities have not yet established the motive for the attack. Police said preliminary investigations had revealed that some of the victims were known to Crime Intelligence in connection with alleged illegal activities. However, police have not disclosed further information because investigations are ongoing.
Police have also said that a possible feud between rival groups cannot be ruled out as investigators work to determine what led to the shooting.
The incident has shocked residents in KwaMakhutha, a township located about 30 kilometres south of Durban.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli was expected to visit the area to assess the situation and engage with law enforcement officials, community representatives and affected families.
