WATCH| American YouTuber MrBeast Rebuilds Rundown Ghana Village With Nearly $10 Million
American YouTuber and philanthropist Jimmy Donaldson, popularly known as MrBeast, has supported the transformation of a rundown village in Ghana through a project reportedly costing nearly US$10 million.
The project, located in Abna Dakwa in Ghana’s Eastern Region, was undertaken as part of an initiative aimed at improving living conditions and creating better opportunities for residents, particularly children in cocoa-growing communities.
The development serves approximately 1,062 residents and includes several facilities designed to improve access to education, healthcare, clean water, sanitation and economic opportunities.
Among the major additions is a school with the capacity to accommodate more than 300 students, alongside 10 houses for teachers.
A medical clinic has also been constructed to provide residents with improved access to basic healthcare services without having to travel long distances for treatment.
The village has also benefited from clean-water infrastructure and solar power installations as part of efforts to improve essential services and living conditions.
Other facilities incorporated into the development include sanitation infrastructure, a community marketplace, agricultural facilities, fish tanks, a chicken coop, a football field and a playground for children.
The project reportedly took approximately one year of planning, followed by eight months of construction.
Beyond physical infrastructure, the initiative is intended to address some of the challenges faced by families in cocoa-producing communities, particularly limited access to education and economic opportunities.
A key objective is to provide children with alternatives to child labour by improving access to schooling and supporting families with facilities and opportunities that can contribute to their livelihoods.
As part of the initiative, students are expected to receive free school meals for five years, with support from The Rockefeller Foundation.
The project forms part of a broader campaign linked to the 1 Billion Acts of Kindness initiative, which has brought together organisations and individuals seeking to support communities through various development and humanitarian projects.
The initiative has also been associated with the 1 Billion Followers Summit, the Varkey Foundation and Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives.
For residents of Abna Dakwa, the development represents a major transformation in the infrastructure available within the community.
The combination of education, healthcare, water, energy, sanitation and livelihood-related facilities is intended to address several challenges at the same time rather than focusing on a single area of need.
The project has also drawn attention to the conditions experienced by communities involved in Ghana’s cocoa industry and the wider issue of child labour.
By improving access to education and providing support for families, the initiative seeks to contribute to an environment where children can remain in school while communities develop alternative economic opportunities.
MrBeast has become known internationally for combining his large YouTube audience with philanthropic projects in different parts of the world.
His Ghana project adds to those efforts, bringing significant investment into a rural community and placing its development needs before a global online audience.
With the new facilities now available, the long-term impact of the project will depend on how effectively the infrastructure is maintained and how the community continues to use the educational, health and economic opportunities created through the initiative.
