The Pan African Initiative on Media and Journalism (AfroMedia) has invited African journalists, media professionals and filmmakers to participate in the “Athar” Short and Documentary Film Award, an initiative designed to celebrate visual storytelling focused on development, sustainability and humanitarian impact.
The award, launched by the Misr El Kheir Foundation, seeks to provide African creators with a platform to showcase films that document community stories, successful development experiences and innovative solutions to social, environmental and economic challenges.
AfroMedia said the initiative forms part of its efforts to support creative talent across Africa while strengthening the role of media and art in documenting stories of positive change on the continent.
Through the award, filmmakers and media professionals will have an opportunity to use visual storytelling to highlight initiatives and experiences that contribute to development and sustainable communities.
The organisers are particularly interested in films that demonstrate how individuals, communities and organisations are responding to social, environmental and economic challenges.
The competition is open to a broad range of participants, including journalists and media professionals, young and amateur filmmakers, media and film students, small production companies, as well as institutions and organisations documenting development projects.
To qualify, submitted films must have been produced within the last three years. Each entry must also have a running time of at least two minutes and no more than 20 minutes.
The films must focus on issues connected to development or sustainability in the social, environmental or economic fields.
The organisers have also stipulated that all footage used in submitted films must be original or obtained with the appropriate legal permissions.
Eligible productions include documentaries, short fiction films and animated films, giving participants flexibility in the way they present their stories.
For films that are not in Arabic, Arabic or English subtitles must be provided to ensure that the productions can be understood by a wider audience.
Another requirement is that a film does not need to have received its first screening at a film festival to qualify for consideration.
The Athar Award is built around the idea that Africa’s development experiences deserve greater visibility and that media and creative arts can help share successful initiatives, raise awareness about common challenges and encourage conversations around sustainable development.
By bringing together journalists, filmmakers, students and organisations, the initiative also seeks to create opportunities for different groups involved in African storytelling to showcase their work to a wider audience.
The Misr El Kheir Foundation, which launched the award, was established in 2007 and has worked on initiatives aimed at supporting sustainable development and building the capacities of individuals and institutions.
The foundation’s involvement in the initiative reflects the broader focus of the award on development and community impact.
For African creators working on documentaries, short films or other forms of visual storytelling, the Athar Award provides an opportunity to bring attention to stories that might otherwise receive limited exposure.
