The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect following an operation that authorities say foiled an alleged robbery attempt involving banks in the Labone area of Accra.
The suspect has been identified as Augustine Okechukwu Maazi, who was taken into police custody to assist with investigations into the incident.
According to the police, officers received information on August 13, 2026, about an alleged group preparing to target financial institutions within the Labone area. The information prompted an immediate police response.
The police said officers subsequently located individuals they suspected of being connected to the planned robbery. During the operation, one vehicle reportedly attempted to leave the area, leading to the arrest of Maazi, while another person allegedly escaped.
Police further reported that a confrontation involving another group resulted in two suspects being killed. The bodies were subsequently taken to a morgue for identification and further procedures.
The operation has attracted considerable public attention following the release of footage showing the arrest of Maazi. The video shows police officers taking the suspect into custody during the operation.
The police have said investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged robbery plan and to identify other individuals who may have been involved.
The incident has also generated discussion after GCB Bank reportedly clarified that there was no robbery or attempted robbery inside its Labone branch. The bank said its premises were not breached and that its customers, staff, funds and property were not affected.
The police account, however, maintains that officers acted on intelligence concerning an alleged plan to target GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank in the Labone area before the suspects could carry out the alleged attack.
The differing accounts have generated questions about the circumstances surrounding the police operation, making further clarification from the relevant authorities important.
For now, Maazi remains in police custody as investigations continue. He has not been convicted of any offence, and the allegations against him remain subject to due legal process.
The Ghana Police Service is expected to continue its investigations, including efforts to establish the identities and whereabouts of other individuals allegedly connected to the incident.
The operation has also renewed attention on security around financial institutions in Accra and the importance of effective law-enforcement measures to protect banks, their employees and customers.
