South African man arrested at OR Tambo international airport over Heroin after arriving from Ghana
A 52-year-old South African man has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after police allegedly discovered substances suspected to be heroin in his luggage following his arrival from Ghana.
The arrest was made on Sunday, September 20, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS), with support from the Border Management Authority (BMA).
According to police, the man had just arrived on a flight from Accra when he was intercepted at the airport.
A subsequent search of his luggage allegedly uncovered bullet-like objects and blocks containing substances suspected to be heroin. Police estimated the street value of the suspected drugs at more than R2 million.
Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect as investigations continue.
The arrest has been described by police as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt suspected drug-trafficking activities through South Africa’s major ports of entry.
The latest incident is also reportedly the third suspected drug-mule arrest recorded at OR Tambo International Airport within three weeks.
Police said the suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court later this week, where he is expected to face drug-trafficking-related charges.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the suspected consignment and determine whether other individuals may be connected to the case.
SAPS has said it will continue with intelligence-led and targeted operations aimed at disrupting suspected trafficking networks operating through the country’s airports and other points of entry.
The Border Management Authority’s involvement in the operation also reflects cooperation between South African agencies responsible for border security and law enforcement.
While police have described the seized substances as suspected heroin, the allegation remains subject to forensic examination and the legal process.
The suspect’s arrest does not by itself establish guilt, and any charges brought against him will have to be tested through the courts.
The case is expected to come before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court as authorities continue their investigation into the suspected drug-trafficking incident.
