Sandema SHTS shut down after riots
The Sandema Senior High Technical School in the Builsa North District of the Upper East Region has been shut down for two weeks following a clash between rioting students and police officers on Tuesday.
The decision was taken by the management of the school in collaboration with the district security council after a meeting on Wednesday, 17 July 2019.
A first-year male student of the school was reported dead with another unconscious after students of the school clashed with the police on Tuesday, 16 July 2019.
The student died from a stray bullet that hit him in the chest as the police attempted dispersing the rioting students who had gone on the rampage.
According to Class News sources, the confusion broke out when a group of students resisted attempts by the school’s cadet corps to drive them into their dormitories.
The situation degenerated into chaos leading to the hurling of stones and missiles by the students at the staff of the school, destroying property in the process.
The police were called in to calm the situation but the students reportedly turned their anger on the law enforcers resulting in the firing of warning shots to diffuse the situation.
In the process, the student was hit by the stray bullet. He was rushed by the police to the Sandema District Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after he was admitted.
The situation has since created tension in the area and several students have deserted the school.
