The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has begun considering possible candidates to take charge of the Black Stars following the departure of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz.
Among the names emerging in connection with the vacant position are current Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren and former Senegal coach Aliou Cissé.
The search comes after the GFA and Queiroz ended their working relationship following Ghana’s disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Queiroz, who was appointed earlier in 2026, left the position after Ghana suffered defeats in their opening two qualifying matches, leaving the Black Stars without a point from those games.
The GFA is now faced with the task of finding a coach capable of restoring stability to the national team ahead of the next stage of the qualifiers.
Aliou Cissé is one of the experienced names reportedly under consideration. The Senegalese coach has an extensive record in international football, having guided the Teranga Lions for several years.
Cissé led Senegal to their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022 and also took the team to the knockout stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
His experience in managing a national team and success at continental level could make him an attractive option as Ghana looks for a new technical leader.
Cissé is currently the head coach of Angola, meaning any potential move to Ghana would require discussions regarding his existing position.
Kim Lars Björkegren has also emerged as a possible option, particularly for an interim appointment.
The Swedish coach is already familiar with Ghanaian football, having been placed in charge of the Black Queens. His work with the women’s national team has reportedly prompted some stakeholders to consider whether he could temporarily take responsibility for the senior men’s team.
Taking Over FC owner Dr Godfred Akoto Boafo has previously questioned why Björkegren should not be considered for the interim position. He suggested that the Black Queens coach could guide the Black Stars through their upcoming fixtures while the GFA continues its search for a permanent appointment.
The GFA has constituted a five-member committee to lead the process of finding and recommending the next Black Stars coach.
The committee is chaired by former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe and includes former Black Stars captains Anthony Baffoe and Stephen Appiah, Abdul Faisal Chibsah and lawyer Agbesi Dzakpasu.
The committee is expected to assess potential candidates before submitting its recommendation to the relevant authorities.
Several other coaches have also reportedly been linked with the Black Stars job, although no final decision has been announced.
The appointment will be closely watched as Ghana seeks to revive its fortunes in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers and build a stable technical structure for the national team.
For now, both Cissé and Björkegren remain potential options rather than confirmed appointments, with the GFA’s selection process still ongoing.
