US Embassy expresses sorrow over death of 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager Javits Frimpong in New York

The United States Embassy in Ghana has expressed deep sadness following the tragic death of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, a Ghanaian-descended student who was fatally shot in New York City.
In a statement, the US Embassy extended its condolences to the bereaved family, friends and all those mourning the teenager’s death in both Ghana and the United States.
The embassy said it was deeply saddened by the incident and acknowledged the grief being experienced by people on both sides of the Atlantic following the loss of the young student.
“We hold Javits’ family, friends, and all who mourn him in Ghana and the United States in our thoughts,” the embassy stated.
Javits’ death has attracted considerable attention in Ghana and among members of the Ghanaian community in the United States, particularly following reports surrounding the circumstances of the fatal shooting.
The 15-year-old was reportedly shot while walking to school in the Bronx, New York, on October 29, 2026. He was rushed to St Barnabas Hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds but was pronounced dead.
His death sparked grief among his classmates at DreamYard Preparatory School, who subsequently staged a demonstration to honour his memory and raise concerns about bullying and gun violence.
During the protest, students carried placards with messages including “Justice for Javits”, “Forever 15” and “Protect Kids, Not Guns”. They also called for greater protection for young people and safer communities.
The demonstration brought renewed attention to the dangers of gun violence affecting teenagers and the need for schools and communities to take concerns about student safety seriously.
The teenager’s father, Thomas Frimpong, also raised concerns about alleged bullying his son had experienced before his death. He reportedly said the school’s principal had informed him that two students were suspended following an altercation involving Javits.
However, investigators have not established whether the reported school dispute was connected to the shooting.
The New York Police Department is investigating the incident and has been searching for suspects in connection with the killing.
The US Embassy’s statement adds to the expressions of sympathy following the death, which has deeply affected Javits’ family, school community and Ghanaians living both at home and abroad.
As the family and friends continue to mourn the teenager, calls for justice and stronger measures to protect young people from violence remain central to the public response to the tragedy.
