Nigerian international Ademola Lookman was named the Best African International Footballer of the Year at the Ghana Football Awards in Accra on Saturday, June 29.
This recognition comes on the heels of his remarkable campaign with Atalanta last season, where he led the Serie A side to their first Europa League title.
Lookman delivered a stellar performance, netting a stunning hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen at the Aviva Stadium, guiding Gian Piero Gasperini’s side to their first-ever European title.
The 26-year-old also registered 17 goals and 10 assists across all competitions for the Bergamo-based club.
Lookman beat out Super Eagles teammate Victor Boniface and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmund Tapsoba to win the award.
He succeeded Victor Osimhen, who won the award last season following his explosive season with Napoli, leading the club to their first Scudetto title.
In a video message, Lookman expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the recognition:
“Thank you for the consideration, recognition, and votes. This means a lot to me and my family. I wish I was in Ghana, but my heart is with you all. Thank you, and God bless.”
