The United States has reportedly spent about US$45.1 billion on its war with Iran, highlighting the enormous financial cost of the ongoing military conflict.
According to a report citing two sources familiar with the matter, the Pentagon provided the figure to Congress as lawmakers continue to assess the financial impact of the conflict on the United States.
The reported expenditure covers major costs associated with the US military campaign, including the replacement of equipment and munitions used during the conflict.
The figure comes as US officials continue to monitor the financial and economic consequences of the war, with estimates indicating that the costs could increase further if military operations continue at a high intensity.
A separate assessment by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that the US Department of Defense had spent more than US$38 billion through August 1, 2026 on the conflict. The CBO also said the war could cost the United States up to about US$3 billion per month or more, depending on the intensity of the fighting.
The Congressional Budget Office said much of the expenditure was linked to replacing military equipment and munitions lost during the conflict. Its assessment, however, did not include some longer-term costs, including expenses associated with military personnel who were killed or injured and future veterans’ healthcare and disability compensation.
The financial implications extend beyond direct military spending. The CBO warned that disruptions to energy and shipping routes could also affect the wider US economy.
According to the assessment, disruptions involving the Strait of Hormuz and shipping through the Red Sea have contributed to economic pressures, including higher energy costs. The agency projected that the conflict could contribute to higher inflation into the first quarter of 2027.
The US administration had also requested additional funding from Congress to support the war effort. However, the CBO noted that the amount directly related to the conflict was substantial and that its own estimates remained subject to uncertainty because of limitations in available information.
The reported US$45.1 billion figure therefore represents a significant financial burden for the American government, while the overall cost of the conflict could continue to change as military operations and their wider economic effects develop.
The latest figures provide an indication of the scale of resources being committed by Washington as the conflict continues, with lawmakers expected to remain focused on both immediate military expenditure and the longer-term economic consequences.
