Police uncover how Senegalese goalkeeper Cheikh Touré was allegedly lured to Ghana and killed
The Ghana Police Service has disclosed details of its investigation into the death of Senegalese goalkeeper Cheikh Touré, revealing how he was allegedly lured to Ghana under the guise of a football opportunity.
The investigation has so far resulted in the arrest of two foreign nationals identified as 32-year-old Nigerien Salifu Walid and 24-year-old Burkinabe Aziz Wadrago Mane.
The two suspects were arrested on September 20, 2026, at a hideout in Banpanase, near Mamponteng, in the Ashanti Region. Police said they are linked to a four-member group allegedly involved in the kidnapping and death of Touré.
According to the police, the group allegedly operated under the guise of football scouting agents and used online platforms and personal networks to attract unsuspecting individuals to Ghana with promises of football-related opportunities.
Investigators say Touré was among those allegedly targeted through the scheme.
The circumstances surrounding his death date back to October 2025. Police said three unidentified men, believed to be foreign nationals, brought Touré’s body to the Manhyia District Government Hospital in Kumasi before leaving the facility.
Other reports indicate that the men presented Touré as their brother and claimed that he had been involved in an accident. He was pronounced dead on arrival, after which the body was reportedly taken to the Ebenezer Mortuary at Tafo.
The death had earlier attracted the attention of Senegalese authorities. In October 2025, Senegal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said preliminary investigations indicated that the young footballer may have been a victim of a fraud and extortion network and called on Ghanaian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.
Following months of intelligence-led investigations, the Ghana Police Service identified Walid and Mane as suspects in the case.
Police said the two suspects allegedly admitted during interrogation that they were involved in the incident and provided information about their respective roles in allegedly luring Touré to Ghana. The specific circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnapping and how Touré died have not been fully disclosed by investigators.
Police have also identified two other individuals they believe may have played roles in the alleged operation.
One of them is Noukoubri Arzouma Sylviain, also known as Prince Pierre, while the other has been identified only as Barry. Both are currently wanted by the police.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command said efforts have been intensified to arrest the two wanted suspects and identify any other persons who may have been involved.
Walid and Mane remain in police custody and are expected to be processed for court as investigations continue.
The Police Service has said the investigation will continue until all persons found to have played a role in the alleged kidnapping and death of Cheikh Touré are identified and brought before the appropriate authorities.
The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against the suspects have yet to be tested in court.
