Wives who deny their husbands sex can be jailed for 2 years, fined GH¢6,000 – Police chief warns
Wives who wear jeans shorts to bed as a way of denying their husbands’ sex could be prosecuted and if found guilty jailed up to two years, fined GH¢6,000 or both.
The Central Regional Coordinator of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), Superintendent George Appiah-Sakyi who revealed this during a day’s sensitization workshop for Muslim women, explained that such acts constitute domestic violence.
He stressed that the punishment for emotional abuse could be a maximum of two years imprisonment jail term or to a fine of 500 penalty units which is equivalent to GH¢6,000 or both when found guilty.
“If your wife wears jeans to sleep and causing you emotional abuse it’s an offence and you can report her to DOVVSU,” Superintendent Appiah-Sakyi stated.
To this end, he urged husbands not to feel shy to report their abusive wives to the police the appropriate sanctions to be applied against them but also indicated that the law applies to the other party.
The police chief was also quick to explain that under no circumstance should husbands reject food prepared for them by their wives as this also amounts to the same abuse.
“If your husbands refuse to eat your food and make you unhappy and cause you emotional pain, you can also report them to the police. If your husband comes home late and causes you to be unhappy you can make a case at DOVVSU,” he said adding that all these are enshrined in the Domestic Violence Act 732 of 2007.
