Two people have died while six others sustained injuries following a three-vehicle crash at Dr. Marbel Junction on the Accra–Kumasi Highway in the Suhum Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The accident, which occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, involved a DAF truck, a Volkswagen Sprinter bus and a tricycle.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to the incident after receiving a distress call at about 11:21 a.m. Personnel from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station were dispatched to the scene to rescue victims and manage the situation.
According to preliminary information, the DAF truck developed a brake failure while travelling along the highway. The driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into the Volkswagen Sprinter bus.
The force of the collision caused the Sprinter bus to collide with a tricycle that was parked at the junction, resulting in damage to all three vehicles.
The two fatalities were identified as one male and one female, while six other people reportedly sustained injuries in the crash.
Emergency responders encountered one of the victims trapped beneath the DAF truck. Firefighters used specialised rescue equipment to free the trapped individual before the victim was transported to the Suhum Government Hospital for medical attention.
The other injured victims were also taken to a medical facility for treatment.
The crash caused significant concern among motorists and residents in the area, with emergency personnel working at the scene to rescue those affected and ensure that the situation was brought under control.
The Ghana Police Service also attended the scene and is assisting with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Although preliminary findings point to brake failure as a possible cause, further investigations are expected to establish the full circumstances that led to the collision.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns about vehicle maintenance and road safety, particularly on major highways that carry significant volumes of commercial and private traffic.
Following the crash, authorities urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles are properly serviced and roadworthy before embarking on journeys.
The Ghana National Fire Service also emphasised the importance of exercising caution on the roads, noting that proper vehicle maintenance can help reduce the risk of avoidable crashes.
