WATCH: OK Frimpong loses two bail applications as Dafeamekpor confirms November 18 extradition hearing

Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has provided an update on the continued detention of Asante Akyem North MP, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, popularly known as OK Frimpong, in the Netherlands.

According to Dafeamekpor, two attempts to secure the release of the Ghanaian legislator on bail have been unsuccessful, leaving him in the custody of Dutch authorities as the legal proceedings surrounding his possible extradition to the United States continue.

Speaking during Parliament’s Leaders’ Media Briefing on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Dafeamekpor disclosed that both the initial bail application and a subsequent appeal had been rejected.

He explained that the legal team was now preparing for the substantive extradition hearing, which has been scheduled for November 18, 2026.

The Majority Chief Whip indicated that the hearing would be an important stage in determining the next steps in the legal process involving the detained Ghanaian lawmaker.

Dafeamekpor also addressed reports suggesting that OK Frimpong had already been transferred to the United States, dismissing such claims.

He clarified that the MP remained in the Netherlands and was still going through the judicial process in that country. He stressed that the extradition proceedings had not yet been concluded and that the relevant legal procedures were ongoing.

OK Frimpong was arrested on May 10, 2026, at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport following an extradition request from the United States.

The request is linked to allegations involving romance scams, money laundering, bank fraud and wire fraud. However, these remain allegations, and the legal process is expected to determine whether the requirements for extradition have been satisfied.

His continued detention has attracted considerable attention in Ghana, particularly because he is a sitting Member of Parliament representing Asante Akyem North.

The situation has also generated discussions about the government’s diplomatic involvement and the assistance being provided to the lawmaker while he remains in Dutch custody.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has previously confirmed that the country’s diplomatic mission in The Hague is providing consular assistance and engaging with the MP’s family, lawyers and Dutch authorities.

Meanwhile, former Asante Akyem North MP Kwadwo Baah Agyemang has questioned the government’s handling of the matter, calling for greater attention to the continued detention of the legislator.

Dafeamekpor, in his latest update, appealed to Ghanaians to remember OK Frimpong and his legal team in their prayers as they prepare for the November 18 hearing.

He expressed hope that the proceedings would go favourably and eventually allow the MP to return to Ghana and resume his parliamentary responsibilities.

For now, OK Frimpong remains in the Netherlands following the unsuccessful bail applications, with attention focused on the forthcoming extradition hearing and the legal arguments expected to be presented before the Dutch authorities.
