Ghanaians seeking to obtain or renew their passports can now complete much of the application process online, with different service options available depending on how quickly they need their travel documents.
The passport application system, operated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, allows applicants to submit their personal information, make payments and schedule appointments before visiting a Passport Application Centre (PAC) for biometric registration.
The first step is to visit the official Ghana Passport Application Portal and create an account or sign in if an account already exists. Applicants are then required to select the appropriate passport service and complete the online application form with accurate personal information.
After filling out the form, applicants must provide the required supporting documents and carefully review their details before proceeding to payment. It is important to ensure that all information is correct to avoid complications during processing.
The next stage involves paying the applicable passport fee through the approved payment channels provided on the portal. Applicants are advised to keep their payment confirmation and other application details for reference.
Once payment and submission are completed, applicants must book an appointment at a designated Passport Application Centre. They are required to attend the appointment with the relevant original documents to undergo biometric registration, including fingerprint capture and photograph-taking.
The cost of obtaining a Ghanaian passport depends on the type of service selected and the number of pages required.
Under the published fee structure, a regular 32-page passport costs GH¢350, while the 48-page option costs GH¢644. Applicants who choose the expedited service pay GH¢700 for a 32-page passport and GH¢800 for the 48-page version.
For those who require their passports urgently, the premium 48-page service costs GH¢2,000. This option is available at designated premium application centres.
Processing times also differ depending on the service selected. The regular service is expected to take approximately 15 working days, while the expedited option takes about seven working days. The premium service is designed to deliver passports within 24 to 48 hours.
These timelines are the stated service periods, although applicants should be aware that incomplete documentation or other processing challenges may affect when their passports are ready.
The application system also provides a tracking facility that allows applicants to monitor the progress of their applications. Once a passport has been processed, applicants in Ghana can receive it through home delivery at no additional cost.
Recipients are expected to present their Ghana Cards and sign for their passports upon delivery.
The passport fee reductions introduced in November 2025 formed part of efforts to make the application process more affordable. Before the reduction, the regular 32-page passport cost GH¢500, but the fee was lowered to GH¢350.
Applicants are encouraged to use the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal for their applications and to check the latest requirements, fees and available appointment centres before making payments.
Although the online system has simplified several stages of the process, biometric registration remains a necessary requirement. Applicants should therefore ensure they attend their scheduled appointments and provide all requested documents.
The reforms are intended to improve access to passport services, reduce unnecessary delays and make the process more convenient for Ghanaians who need travel documents for education, employment, business and other international activities.
