Anthropologist Hassan Ali Ghazaly, founder of Nasser International Forum, has held discussions with senior officials of the League of Arab States on the Palestinian cause, Arab cultural cooperation and efforts to preserve the collective memory of Palestinians affected by the conflict in Gaza.
Ghazaly met Ambassador Dr Fayed Mostafa, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and Head of the Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories Sector, as well as Minister Plenipotentiary Dr Nawal Al-Arabi of the same sector. The meeting took place on the sidelines of a commemoration event held at the League of Arab States Secretariat on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The event was dedicated to remembering victims of what organisers described as genocide against the Palestinian people, particularly in the Gaza Strip. It followed a resolution adopted by the Council of the League of Arab States at ministerial level designating October 17 each year as a day to commemorate victims of genocide against Palestinians.
The initiative aims to preserve Palestinian collective memory, document alleged violations, strengthen efforts towards justice and accountability, and reaffirm international support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
During his meeting with the Palestine Sector officials, Ghazaly expressed appreciation for the invitation and the reception extended to him. He also commended the remarks delivered during the commemoration, which highlighted the suffering of Palestinians affected by occupation, settlement expansion and the conflict.
Ambassador Mostafa shared personal and historical reflections on his family’s connection to former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser and the July 1952 Revolution. He explained that his father, motivated by admiration for Nasser and pride in the revolution, selected July 23 as the birth date for both him and his brother.
According to Mostafa, the decision was intended to honour the revolution’s place in Egypt’s national history and Arab collective consciousness. He also reaffirmed the central importance of the Palestinian cause to the Arab world and expressed appreciation for Egypt’s government, people and leadership for their continued support for Palestinians.
Ghazaly also met Ambassador Zaid Al-Sabban, Director of the Sudan and Horn of Africa Department at the League of Arab States Secretariat and the organisation’s representative to a mechanism dealing with regional issues.
Their discussion focused on Arab culture and the contribution of literature and cinema to shaping public awareness and strengthening relationships among Arab societies. They exchanged views on writers, readers and developments in the Arab cultural landscape, highlighting culture’s role in encouraging dialogue and intellectual exchange across the region.
The commemoration brought together senior Arab officials and representatives who addressed the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Statements were delivered by the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, the President of the Arab Parliament and the Permanent Representative of Palestine to the League.
The speakers highlighted the need for unimpeded humanitarian assistance, civilian protection, a ceasefire, reconstruction and accountability for crimes committed against Palestinians.
The programme also included testimonies from representatives of the medical, media and social sectors, alongside a documentary film documenting reported violations in Gaza. An art exhibition titled โAhwalโ (Horrors), featuring works by Palestinian artists depicting different aspects of the humanitarian crisis, was also inaugurated.
Nasser International Forum’s participation reflected its stated commitment to Arab and humanitarian issues and to keeping the Palestinian cause prominent in regional and international discussions.
The forum also reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian people’s rights to freedom, self-determination and the establishment of an independent state.
