VIDEO: NYPD Investigates Robbery, Mistaken Identity and Bullying in Javits Frimpong’s Murder

The New York Police Department (NYPD) is investigating three possible motives behind the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Ghanaian student Javits Frimpong in the Bronx, New York, as detectives continue their search for the individuals responsible.

The possible motives being examined include a robbery gone wrong, mistaken identity linked to a possible gang rivalry and alleged bullying at the teenager’s school.

Javits was shot on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while walking to DreamYard Preparatory School in the Bronx. He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital but later died from his injuries.

Speaking about the investigation, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny disclosed that three hooded individuals wearing surgical masks were in the area around Crotona Park before the shooting.

According to the police account, the suspects approached Javits, who reportedly attempted to escape. The attackers allegedly chased him before one of them shot him in the back.

Kenny further explained that the suspects returned to collect the shell casings after the shooting before fleeing the scene.

Investigators reportedly traced their movements to a nearby subway station, where they jumped a turnstile and boarded a southbound No. 5 train heading towards Manhattan.

The police chief also revealed that Javits dropped his backpack while attempting to escape. The bag was allegedly taken by another individual and has not been recovered.

On the possible robbery motive, detectives are examining whether the attackers intended to rob the teenager and whether the shooting occurred during an attempted robbery.

Another possibility being investigated is mistaken identity. Police are looking into whether the attackers may have confused Javits with another person who could have been connected to a gang rivalry.

However, Kenny indicated that investigators had not found evidence suggesting that the Ghanaian teenager was involved in gang activities.

The third line of investigation concerns alleged bullying at DreamYard Preparatory School.

Javits’ father, Thomas Frimpong, had previously told media outlets that his son was involved in a confrontation with two students days before his death. He said the school had suspended the students following the incident.

Kenny confirmed that detectives were examining the allegation as part of their investigation. However, the police needed to obtain relevant school records through the appropriate legal process.

The New York City Department of Education indicated that student records are protected by law and that it would respond to police requests in accordance with applicable regulations.

Despite reviewing surveillance footage and tracing the suspects’ movements, the NYPD had not announced any arrests as of November 4, 2026.

The killing has sparked grief among members of the Ghanaian community in the United States and Ghana, with relatives and community members demanding justice for the teenager.

Javits’ mother, Doris Adu Gyamfi, travelled from Ghana to the United States following the tragedy. She arrived in New York on Wednesday, November 4, after receiving assistance with her visa arrangements.

The Ghanaian government has also pledged support to the bereaved family, including assistance with travel arrangements and funeral-related matters.

For now, investigators are continuing to examine the possible motives and appeal for information that could help identify the suspects. The circumstances surrounding Javits’ death remain under investigation, and no individual has been publicly held responsible for the killing.
