Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Chairman of the Committee of Eminent Chiefs tasked to resolve the Dagbon crises has said the investiture of the new Overlord of Dagbon, Ya Na Abukari Mahama II marks an era of peace for the people of Dagbon in the Northern Region.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Juabenhene Nana Otuo Siriboe II at the outdooring ceremony of the new Ya Na, the Asantehee said: “To the glory of God, we come together today to bear testimony that at long last, after 16 gruelling and agonising years, the deed is indeed done and we can convey to the world, peace at last. We thank God [that] Dagbon has peace at last. So, we have come to pay homage to the symbol of that peace, the father and monarch to this great kingdom, Ya Na Abukari II”.

He said that the people of Dagbon now have a new father and with united efforts, the area can achieve economic and social development.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II prayed for lasting peace and prosperity for Dagbon.

He said the resolution of the conflict was one of the promises of President Nana Akufo-Addo and therefore thanked Mr Akufo-Addo “for delivering on your promise”.

Background

Following the killing of the late Ya Na Yakubu Andani II in 2002, the John Agyekum Kufuor government set up a Committee of Eminent Chiefs led by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to help find a solution to the crisis.

The committee in November 2018 presented a final road map for peace to President Nana Akufo-Addo. The road map also led to the successful performance of the funerals of Ya Na Abdulai and Ya Na Andani.

The kingmakers of Dagbon eventually selected Ya Na Abubakari Mahama II as the new overlord of the Dagbon traditional area.
