MTN donates Math books to Senior High Schools, calls for new approach to Math education
The MTN Ghana Foundation has called for a relook at Math and Science education in Ghana. The foundation is calling for more innovative ways of teaching Math and Science to make it understandable and practical to Ghanaian students.
The call was made Wednesday when the MTN Ghana Foundation donated special core mathematics revision books to four Senior High Schools within the northern Sector of Ghana.
Bonwire Senior High Technical School and Simms Senior High Schools in the Ashanti region were amongst the schools that benefited from the gesture. They received three hundred of the MTN branded books each.
In all, two thousand books were given out to six schools at the cost of sixty thousand Ghana Cedis countrywide.
Presenting the books to the two schools in the Ashanti region, Acting General Manager of MTN’s Northern Sector; Simon Amoh explained that MTN hopes to improve the performance of the schools in Math and Science and also brighten their future prospects.
He explained that MTN Ghana Foundation will assess the impact of the donations by monitoring the performance of the beneficiary schools in Math in the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).
Headmistress for Bonwire Senior High Technical Schools; Madam Cassandra Osei Wusu Antobre who was very grateful to MTN Ghana Foundation lamented that the performance of her school in Math and Science has been abysmal over the years but for 2019 that the performance saw some improvement. She hopes the books will help improve on the performance of the students.
She also asked for MTN for more infrastructure particularly classrooms, dormitories and more urgently, furniture. She explains that the school’s population currently two thousand, one hundred and fifty (2,150). She said those who completed last year were two hundred and thirty-two (232) whiles there are currently one thousand one hundred and fifty (1,150) first year students.
The students from both schools were also excited about the donations and promised to put the books to good use.
