Meet Majeed Alidu, the Ghana Premier League’s youngest-ever captain

Ghanaian football is witnessing the emergence of another promising young talent, with Labaran Majeed Alidu making history as one of the youngest players to take on a leadership role in the Ghana Premier League.

Born on February 24, 2009, Alidu has already featured for Vision FC despite being only 17 years old. He plays primarily as a defender and has been identified as the youngest-ever captain in the Ghana Premier League.

His rise has been particularly notable because of the responsibility associated with leading a senior professional side at such a young age.

Alidu is part of a youthful Vision FC squad that has increasingly provided opportunities for emerging Ghanaian players. His progress reflects the club’s emphasis on developing young talent and giving them opportunities to compete at a high level.

The Ghana Football Association has previously recognised Alidu’s development. At Vision FC’s end-of-season awards, he was named the club’s Young Player of the Season, underlining his importance to the team’s development structure.

His performances have also earned him attention beyond his club. Football records show that the young defender has been involved regularly for Vision FC, including during the 2025/26 season.

What makes Alidu’s story particularly remarkable is the age at which he has begun taking on senior responsibilities. While many players his age are still progressing through youth football, the Vision FC defender has already been exposed to the demands of Ghana’s top-flight competition.

His emergence could also provide encouragement for efforts to develop young Ghanaian footballers and create pathways from youth football into the senior game.

Vision FC’s willingness to trust young players has helped create an environment in which talents such as Alidu can gain valuable experience. The defender’s progress is therefore one to watch as he continues to develop his game and leadership qualities.

For Ghanaian football, Alidu’s rise offers another example of the young talent emerging through the domestic league. At just 17, he has already achieved a distinction that could become an important milestone in his developing career.

With several years ahead of him to improve and gain experience, attention will now be on how Alidu builds on his breakthrough and whether he can establish himself as one of the country’s leading young defenders.

His story also demonstrates the potential of the Ghana Premier League as a platform for young footballers to develop their abilities while competing at senior level.
