Kunfusi Dam collapse cuts off 15,000 residents in Savannah Region

About 15,000 residents of Kunfusi and surrounding communities in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region have reportedly been cut off from the rest of the region following severe flooding and the collapse of the Kunfusi Dam.

The incident occurred after approximately 15 hours of continuous rainfall between September 23 and 24, 2026, resulting in widespread flooding and significant damage to roads in the area.

The situation has rendered major roads impassable, disrupting the movement of residents, farm produce, food and other essential supplies to and from the affected communities.

The Chief of Kunfusi, Kunfusiwura Saaka Awusi, confirmed the situation and expressed concern about the impact of the flooding on residents.

According to the chief, the condition of the roads has deteriorated to the extent that vehicles can no longer access the community.

He said the situation had effectively isolated thousands of residents from other parts of the Savannah Region.

Several sections of the Tuna-Kalba road have also reportedly been affected by the flooding, worsening transportation difficulties and making it challenging for residents to travel between communities.

The disruption has raised particular concern because Kunfusi and neighbouring communities are important food-producing areas within the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District.

With the roads becoming difficult or impossible to use, residents could face challenges transporting agricultural produce to markets, while access to essential goods and services may also be affected.

The chief has consequently appealed to the government and relevant authorities to urgently intervene and restore access to the affected communities.

He also called for a lasting solution to the recurring flooding and road challenges in the area, stressing the importance of addressing the problem permanently rather than relying on temporary interventions whenever heavy rains occur.

Residents are similarly seeking urgent assistance to reopen the affected roads and restore safe movement between Kunfusi and neighbouring communities.

The flooding has once again highlighted the transportation challenges faced by communities in the district during periods of heavy rainfall.

Authorities are expected to assess the extent of the damage and determine the measures required to restore connectivity and support residents affected by the disruption.

For the affected communities, restoring access is particularly important for the movement of people and agricultural produce, as well as access to essential services.

The situation remains a concern for residents as efforts are sought to address both the immediate effects of the flooding and the longer-term challenges contributing to the recurring disruption.
