Fire guts shops at Kumasi Central Market

A fire has swept through several shops at the Kumasi Central Market in the Ashanti Region, destroying goods and property and raising fresh concerns about fire safety in one of Ghana’s busiest commercial centres.

The incident occurred on the night of Friday, October 9, 2026, in the vicinity of Aboabo Station at the market. The blaze reportedly spread through shops in the area, leaving affected traders facing potential financial losses.

Residents and other people at the scene reportedly made efforts to contain the fire before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service arrived to tackle the blaze.

The firefighters worked to bring the situation under control and prevent the fire from spreading further to adjoining shops and businesses.

The Kumasi Central Market is a major trading hub in the Ashanti Region, attracting traders and customers from different parts of Ghana. The destruction of shops and merchandise could therefore affect the livelihoods of traders who depend on daily sales to support themselves and their families.

However, the exact number of shops affected and the total value of the goods and property destroyed had not been established in the available reports.

The cause of the fire also remained unknown, with further information expected from the relevant authorities as investigations and assessments continue.

The incident adds to concerns over fire outbreaks in commercial areas, where closely packed shops and the storage of goods can make it difficult to contain a blaze once it starts.

Traders affected by the incident may face the challenge of rebuilding their businesses and replacing lost stock, depending on the extent of the damage.

Authorities are expected to provide further details on the incident, including the cause of the fire, the extent of the destruction and any measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
