The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned the public against eating tilapia and smoked fish from unknown sources.

“If you are fond of tilapia but you are not so sure of the source, the best thing to do is avoid buying it,” the Public Relations Officer for the FDA, James Lartey, stated on Monday, 22 October 2018.

He was responding to the destruction of some 18 tonnes of tilapia that were destroyed at Asutuare in the Greater Accra Region.

The tilapia are suspected to be genetically modified and could not survive the Ghanaian environment.

The fish were brought into the country by some Chinese nationals.

The part of the Chinese farm where the fish could not survive has been closed down.

However, Mr. Lartey revealed that there was the possibility of the fish finding their way onto the markets, hence the caution.

“Though it has not been confirmed yet, it is possible that the fish have gone into the market because of the social media circulation,” he told Accra-based Joy FM.

“The investigation team has picked samples of the fish and water to test and [to] find the cause of death,” he added.
