Ayawaso By-Election: Three Feared Dead, Two Reportedly Shot At Baweleshie

At least three people are feared dead and two others have sustained various degree of injured at the Baweleshie polling centre in the ongoing by-election in the Ayawaso constituency following shootings over the polls on Thursday, 31st January, 2019.

According to report, several dozen security detail wearing black masks and shirts labelled NSC (National Security Council) stormed inside the polling station and began firing shots.

According to Accra fm’s reporter Fred Agbenyo, the macho men destroyed polling station Basic One and carried the ballot boxes away.

An NDC polling agent, Victus Avevor, who claimed he witnessed the incident, told our reporter that the gun-wielding macho men are members of the Invincible Forces of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr Avevor added: “The people who did that are in the national security uniform but they are not security people.”

He added the development has created fear and panic in the area.

Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress has announced its decision to withdraw from the ongoing by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon in Accra.

The decision was announced in an interview on Accra-based Peace FM by the national chairman of the party Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.

“Officially we have withdrawn. We have alerted all our agents to withdraw, we cannot allow our people to be killed because of this single by-election,” Mr. Ofosu Ampofo noted.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean Mensa has described the gun violence as “unfortunate”.
