adopt deprived communities and help them- knust pro vice chancellor challenges ngos
Pro Vice Chancellor for Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Rev Prof Charles Ansah has challenged Non-governmental organizations to adopt underprivileged communities and offer them life touching support especially school going children who are out of touch with academic support.
He made this call following the soaring number of needy school children in poor communities who have not been able to realize their dreams and have as a result involved themselves in a lot of social vices.
Extension of assistance to children who unfortunately have found themselves in such areas cannot be shouldered by government alone but requires the joint effort of the well to do’s especially NGOs and civil society groups.
Speaking through this medium on the sidelines during holding of a Rural Young Leaders Summit organized by the executives of Nectar of Hope for Children Foundation, Rev Prof Charles Ansah disclosed that the University through the Vice Chancellor is ready to offer all the needed support to such NGOs.
Non-governmental organizations he advised should pick up a village and partner with them so that such communities will be developed.
A classic example he sited was Nectar of Hope for Children Foundation which through the counsel of the vice chancellor has adopted Feyiase community of Bekwai Municipality in Ashanti region for three years now. Since the adoption of the community, the University through the organization has assisted students and the community with exercise books, academic stationaries among other developmental support.
The University through the NGO barely few months ago donated two giant solar lights worth thousands of Ghana cedis to the community.
He described the community as one which is very dear to them and are therefore ready to support them.
“Students in the community who excel in their examination will be supported to come to the University.”he assured.
He indicated in his statement that the university through the vision of the Vice Chancellor has been offering out a lot of support to communities around them, further disclosing that over the past year, they (KNUST) have been phasing out their old furniture and given them out to schools located in deprived areas.
During the summit which was under the theme; “empowering the future young leaders from deprived communities to pursue their future dream” he encouraged children not to give up because of the circumstance within which they find themselves but should rather strive hard.
