Suspected Armed Robber Dies After Collapsing While Leading Police to Alleged Accomplices

A 20-year-old suspected armed robber, identified by police as Muntari Munumi, has died after reportedly collapsing while leading officers to the locations of his alleged accomplices in the Upper East Region.

According to preliminary police reports, Munumi had been arrested in connection with an alleged robbery at Sapeliga Junction in the Kobore area. He reportedly died after complaining of dizziness and losing consciousness while travelling with officers during follow-up investigations.

The robbery allegedly involved two men who were returning from work when they were attacked. Police said the suspect allegedly took a Royal motorbike, three mobile phones and GH¢1,820 from the victims.

During the reported incident, the suspect allegedly fired several rounds from a firearm but did not hit the victims. The two men reportedly struggled with him and managed to seize an M16 A2 assault rifle.

Members of the Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee subsequently apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police for further investigation.

Following his arrest, police reportedly recovered an M16 A2 assault rifle, three live rounds of ammunition and five spent cartridge shells in connection with the case.

Investigators said Munumi later disclosed information about individuals he identified as his alleged accomplices. He reportedly agreed to assist the police by leading officers to locations where the other suspects could be found.

However, during the journey, Munumi allegedly complained of dizziness before suddenly losing consciousness. The officers reportedly rushed him to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.

His body was subsequently deposited at a morgue for preservation and an autopsy to help establish the cause of death.

The circumstances surrounding his sudden collapse remain unclear. Although police reports indicate that he complained of dizziness before losing consciousness, the available information does not establish what caused his death. The outcome of the autopsy will be important in clarifying the circumstances.

Meanwhile, police investigations are expected to continue, with efforts reportedly underway to locate and arrest the individuals Munumi allegedly identified as his accomplices.

The case has also highlighted the role of community-based security groups in supporting law enforcement. The Googo Neighbourhood Watch Committee’s reported involvement in apprehending the suspect formed part of the sequence of events that led to his transfer into police custody.

Authorities will need to establish the full circumstances of the alleged robbery, verify the evidence recovered and determine the involvement of any other individuals. Any suspects identified during the investigation remain entitled to due process under the law.

Munumi had been described as a suspected armed robber, and the allegations against him should not be treated as a conviction. His death also remains subject to clarification through the relevant medical and investigative procedures.
