The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a 52-year-old man, Ibrahim Saani, for allegedly possessing 37 parcels of substances suspected to be Indian hemp at New York, near Airport Junction, in the Greater Accra Region.
According to a press release issued by the Tema Regional Police Headquarters on October 27, 2026, the arrest followed an intelligence-led police operation conducted in the area on Sunday, October 25, at about 7:00 p.m.
During the operation, officers reportedly retrieved a bag containing 37 parcels of compressed substances suspected to be Indian hemp, as well as a crusher. The suspect was subsequently escorted to the police station with the items for further investigation.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Saani may have been involved in the distribution of suspected narcotic substances within New York and surrounding communities.
The police also stated that intelligence gathered during the investigation indicated that the suspect allegedly feigned mental illness to conceal his suspected illegal activities. This claim remains part of the preliminary police account and has not been established as a finding by a court.
The suspected substances are expected to be forwarded for forensic examination to determine their nature and composition. The results are also expected to assist investigators as they continue examining the circumstances surrounding the case.
Police said investigations would also seek to establish whether other individuals were involved in the suspected distribution activities. The suspect and any accomplices identified, if applicable, are expected to be brought before court once investigations are completed.
The Tema Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against involvement in narcotics-related offences, including the possession, distribution and trafficking of illicit drugs.
The command has also urged anyone with credible information about suspected drug-related activities to report it to the nearest police station. According to the statement, public cooperation is important in helping law enforcement agencies investigate offences and protect communities, particularly young people.
The arrest forms part of police efforts to address suspected drug-related activities in the Tema area and its surrounding communities. However, the allegations against Saani remain subject to investigation, and the suspected substances must be tested before their identity can be conclusively established.
The case is expected to proceed through the appropriate legal process as investigators gather further evidence and determine whether charges should be pursued.
